3rd Grade
Origami

Our 3rd graders are working very hard to master the art of Origami.  As inspiration for this unit, we learned about the 1000 Paper Crane legend and read the book Sadako.  After learned how to read and follow origami diagrams, we formed support groups to help each other through the challenge of folding an origami crane.

3rd Grade
Origami Cranes
Integrating Artistic Math!

Origami (折り紙) from ori meaning "folding" and kami meaning "paper"
… is the art of paper folding
While creating our cranes, we learned…
-how to read diagrams and make carefully folded angles.
-how to be a “teacher” to help our struggling friends.
-how to be a “student” and accept help from others.

While investigating our cranes, we learned…
-how to contrast the proportions of real and origami cranes.
-how to convert measurements to create comparisons.
-how to work with each other to examine a new topic.

We learned how Art and Math can work together and so can we!
