After look at all of the awesome artist featured on this channel , I chose to watch the video featuring Kandinsky.  I have always enjoyed his art work!

Kandinsky was well know for connecting his Art to Music.  He would create paintings that represnted how he though the sound of music should look!  I wanted to give it a try....

I chose to listen to Mozart's Rondo Alla Turca.  Have a listen!

I Spy with my ART Eyes

2nd grade had the opportunity to be ART Detectives today.  We traveled around the room to visit mystery art works.  They were challenged to gather evidence from the "visual text" to answer questions about the seasons, weather, and geographic locations.  They did amazing! These deep thinkers were great at gathering facts from the art and making INFERENCES about the art works.  

    

Red Ribbon Week was a wonderful success this year.  Every grade contributed to an amazing school wide display of the Drug Free Theme YOLO (You Only Live Once).  We even won 1st place for the best grade level display for all of Onslow County! 

And drum roll please...............

Congratulations to our 2nd grade team! 

Our Collaborative Agamograph was a big challenge but the students worked together and did an amazing job!  

Our "Family Fun Night" was a ton of ...well...FUN!  This year, we held an art show with a twist.  Instead of just coming in and look at the art that the kiddos made, we set up Give it a TRY stations so the parents can sit down and learn from the kids how to do the projects that they see.  It was wonderful to see the student teaching their parents!

Weaving Wonders!

Collaborative Co-Grade Level Project

To help reinforce weaving concepts across all level, we have two large scale weaving projects that we are all working collaboratively to create.  The kiddos love getting the chance to add a few rows when they finish early.  

This awesome Loom was created for us this year by a parent volunteer.  We are weaving with recycled t-shirt yarn on this loom.  Our goal for this one to make a functional rug that we can use in the library.  We don't have a specific pattern or plan for this weaving... so we will see how it goes and grows!

Our 1st graders are currently learning how to create mini looms and weavings based on this big one!  I'll post more on this project as they finish up :)

 Our second loom was created out of two branches and twine.  We are weaving with shredded scraps of donated clothes and fabrics.  I worked with our older grades to create a plan for a woven picture.  They decided on creating a "Coastal Landscape".  It is looking really good so far!  I love love love the textures of the random fabric scraps!

Chinese New Year 

Clay Dragons

To help bring in the New Year, our 2nd graders have created clay dragons!  We compared the similarities and differences between the symbols and traditions of the Chinese New Year celebrations and our own.  We learned that, in China, the dragon is a symbol good luck, wisdom, and strength for the new year.  We looked at how the traditional Chinese Dragon has different characteristics than the traditional dragons in our western fairy tales.  These 2nd grade sculptors did a grade job!

2nd Grade

Embroidery

Sewing is a traditional skill that is very practical and teaches the students about how the arts can be beautiful and functional!  My 2nd graders start learning the basics of sewing in their first lesson focusing on embroidery techniques.  We using donated t-shirt scraps and embroidery hoops help us learn how to handle a needle,  practice our stitches, and creating some pretty cool letters!
