After look at all of the awesome artist featured on this channel , I chose to watch the video featuring Kandinsky.  I have always enjoyed his art work!

Kandinsky was well know for connecting his Art to Music.  He would create paintings that represnted how he though the sound of music should look!  I wanted to give it a try....

I chose to listen to Mozart's Rondo Alla Turca.  Have a listen!

Now creatively change each form (cube into a robot).

This BINGO square was a lot of fun to draw.  To inspire my creative changes, I looked around my environment and utilized my imagination.  I can't wait to see what you choose to draw with your geometric shapes!

4th Grade Light house Fun   

This year, our 4th graders explored the unique purpose and architecture of North Carolina's iconic Light houses.  They use Google Maps to tour each light house location and selected one of these landmarks as the inspiration for their clay project.  We had a blast sculpting each light house in a low relief clay tile.  They carefully painted their clay to resemble their inspiration.  They were so proud! 

At the end of the project, they wrapped their tiles carefully to prepare them for transport home.  I always enjoy reading their artist reflection at the end of the projects!  They enjoyed explaining their connection to their light house choice.  Some wrote about family trips, background knowledge of the structures history, or just an aesthetic connection to it's patterns... I love seeing them connect!     

Embroidery Projects

4th grade Fiber Arts Unit

Our 4th graders have been working very hard on their embroidery deigns!  They started this unit by looking at how embroidery is used by many cultures throughout history.  We focused our exploration on the amazing Bayeux Tapestry (over 250 feet long!) and discovered how the art of embroidery is not only beautiful but it can capture historical moments too!  We talked about the patience and dedication it takes to create art with string and collectively agreed that the imagery should be significantly important if they were going to invest so much time in its creation.  After watching parts of a great tutorial video by Cassie Stephens , they set to work drawing their "Significant" designs, transferring them to fabric, and embroidering their details with running stitches.

Our "Family Fun Night" was a ton of ...well...FUN!  This year, we held an art show with a twist.  Instead of just coming in and look at the art that the kiddos made, we set up Give it a TRY stations so the parents can sit down and learn from the kids how to do the projects that they see.  It was wonderful to see the student teaching their parents!

1st Grade

Mini Weaving!

My art room has become a weaving wonderland!  With lots of different groups tackling the lots of different fiber art projects this month, we have been unbe-weave-ably busy.  Our 1st graders have just finished up their mini weavings this week and they were super successful!  With the help of our 4th grade friends, we learned how to create a loom, wrap our warp strings (the up and down strings), and weave our weft stings (the right to left stings).
